Messi Suffers First-Ever Group-Stage Exit in Official Competition

Lionel Messi has suffered a first in his remarkable career, with the Argentine superstar eliminated in the group stage of an official competition after Inter Miami were knocked out of the 2026 Leagues Cup.

Inter Miami's campaign ended following defeats to Monterrey and Club León, leaving the MLS side unable to advance to the knockout stage. Inter Miami lost 2–1 to Monterrey before suffering a dramatic 3–2 defeat against León.

The elimination came during an emotional period for Messi, who missed the Monterrey match following the death of his father, Jorge Messi.

Despite not being expected to return so quickly after the family tragedy, Messi made himself available for the crucial clash against León and came on at half-time. However, his return could not prevent Inter Miami from falling to defeat.

León scored twice in the second half to overturn Inter Miami's advantage, with Daniel Arcila scoring the decisive goal in the 83rd minute.

For Messi, the early exit represents an unusual moment in a career filled with trophies, records and deep tournament runs. The Leagues Cup defeat adds another disappointing chapter to Inter Miami's season as the club continues its pursuit of major honours.

The 2026 Leagues Cup knockout stage will proceed without one of the biggest names in world football, while Messi and Inter Miami will now turn their attention to the remainder of their season.
